4 Step Approach To Skills Mastery

“Knowledge has power. It controls access to opportunity and advancement.”
—Peter Drucker
We are living in a knowledge society, where technologies are changing at a very fast pace and innovations are a regular phenomenon. According to a LinkedIn survey – the average shelf life of skills is less than 5 years.
As the skills are changing fast, we all need to switch to new skills on a continuous basis.
According to Mckinsey survey 375 M, which is 14% of the global workforce may need to switch to new skills.
To adopt new skills, we will have to first understand what skills are needed to deliver effective value. Due to the access to the internet, knowledge is accessible to anyone who desires to soak in it.
Linkedin Survey – Nine in 10 executives agree that there is a skills gap issue in the U.S. workforce.
NASSCOM report, about 40 percent of India’s total workforce has to be reskilled over the next five years to cope with emerging trends like AI, IoT, machine learning and blockchain.
With so much learning information available, why is still there a skill gap?
We can follow a 4 step approach to achieve skills mastery
- Identify the skills to be acquired or upgraded
Before you embark on the journey of preparing for the next role or being better at the current role, it’s important to identify the skills that are required to the job effectively.
- Break skills into finer competencies
Following the identification of the skills, you need to break down each skill into finer sub-skills so it provides crystal clarity on the skill area that you need to upgrade or acquire.
- Objectively Assess the skills
If you are asked how healthy you are, you will say I am healthy but once you do a complete body check with the blood test, You will get all the real indicators of healthiness.
That’s the difference between subjective assessment and objective assessment.
If you want to know the skills that you or your teams need help on, you will need to do a detailed objective assessment, which will help you to understand the list of skills/competencies/sub-competencies needs to be improved at what level. It’s like you have skills thermometer with you.
- Learn and Reassess
Once skill assessment is done, you can now define your plan for learning the skills that you need improvement through online, offline courses, mentoring, internships, volunteering for a project in or outside the company and so on.
After completion of learning, it’s important to reassess the skills(independently from the learning provider) so as to confirm the command over the skills.
